Father, theologian, warrior – male archetype in Muslim culture

Conferences
The Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Warsaw, Poland. cordially invites to the international conference:

Father, theologian, warrior – male archetype in Muslim culture.

The conference will be held on June 4th and 5th, 2019 in Warsaw.

It is the role of the Arab and Muslim women that draws special attention as a topic analyzed and described widely, and seemingly „for ages and ages”, both in the common images of the culture and in the research on it. In the recent decades, this interest has been spurred even farther by gender studies. Regrettably, research on the role of men in the Arab and Muslim world is rare. It is safe to say that the research being carried out remains marginal. It is difficult to reconcile with the cultural and research neglect of the man’s role, especially as in consequence this may lead to the idea of gender equality, one of the most prominent among the ideas of the 20th and the 21st century, being pushed into the background. The crisis of masculinity is an often mentioned phenomenon of the Western culture. If we take into account the commonly-conceived concept of cultural diversity, is the same phenomenon present in the areas of the Arab and Muslim world as well?

The conference is intended as an attempt at filling up the gap. We invite to analyze the male figure on similar terms as in the case of a female. What is the man’s role in the Arab and Muslim culture and what is the frequently presented picture of masculinity? Is the widespread depiction of a man’s domination over a woman actually true? What is the language used to describe the Arab and the Muslim male, and what may be found out by means of the linguistic analysis? What are the man’s stereotypes that arise in the Muslim literature and in the literature of the West? We assume it is possible to bring out the facts about the man’s role in the Arab and Muslim world and avoid the duplication of clichés or vague conceptions.
The conference welcomes contributions dealing with such topics as:
– man in society, currently and in the historical perspective;
– man in the Muslim law;
– man in theology;
– man and human (rajul and insan);
– male roles in the family: father, brother, husband, son;
– male characters in literature;
– depiction of a man in the women’s writing;
– self-image of a man;
– man in the Islamic art;
– man and masculinity in language;
– man as a subject of queer studies.

We invite researchers involved in the studies of Islam in Arabic and Muslim countries: orientalists, anthropologists, archaeologists, sociologists, historians, literary scholars and linguists. It is encouraged for the contributions to be based as far as possible on sources in the original languages of the area of a given study. We are looking forward in anticipation to the submission of compelling scholarly works.
